Hay Elgnator I didnt reply till this thread got up in 6 or 7 pages and by then there seemed to be a thought throughout it that laying one down was an acceptable method and was happening often.. there are alot of newer riders reading this forum and that isnt something I want them thinking. This has been studied over and over and with todays tire rubber compounds and their traction and the disc brakes, even Harleys disc brakes, a bike will stop faster in a shorter distance up on two wheels with just half decent brakeing practices than it will slideing down the road on its side.
Haveing been involved in a few motorcycle accident investagations I can tell ya that going down and slideing you can slide under the car and be curshed or slide off to the side and hit a pole or signpost or a parked car a curb ect so it is not without big hazzards either.
I will say from the info on this crash the bike didnt hit the car so the car was not in the bikes path when the bike got there so there was a possible escape route. unless the bike jumped over the car, which has happened. but seldom without preaty high speeds.
in my own ridein onetime I locked it up and started raiseing up on the pegs so I would fly over the SUV I was goint to hit instead of going thru the rear window, when within the last couple seconds he moved over enough for me to clear him on the left. so you dont really know what will happen but if you lay it down you have crashed.
I'm not saying this for any other reason than to inform the newer inexperienced riders. one of the best safety practices you can do is to practice emergency brakeing a couple times every month or two.

I know, I know. Pardon my impatience with advice givers. You make many good points, and we should all practice braking. Putting a bike down should never be a stopping strategy, no question.

I should have listened to the Methodist talking about motorcycle karma.

But the op did say the bike wasnt stopping fast enough to keep from hitting the vehicle.
So he made a split second decision and laid it down, maybe there was another out, maybe not, I wasnt the one making the decision nor was anyone else.
I was driving my work truck one day pulling a trailer and a guy on a crotch rocket ran into my trailer at a traffic light.
he hit good and hard and when I tried to get out to check on him he took off.
I dont think any accident where you get hurt is good, but I have seen a biker hit a car and the guy was thrown and was dead as soon as he hit the pavement.
Its a split second decision what to do and all I can say is I hope everyone here makes the right one to live and ride another day.

Fred, I wish you God speed in your recovery and hope they get your bike back better then new.

Nope. Playing devil's advocate means arguing a position you disagree with in order to determine the validity of an argument, and serves a purpose. You were just being a d!ck.
