I agree with the emergency braking practice. It gives you a feel for what the bike can handle. In my situation, there simply was not an option ie. an "out" that I could take. It was a deep ditch or oncoming traffic. It happened quickly, but not too quick that I didn't have a chance to apply, then reapply the brakes. In the future, my following distance will be double the "2-second" rule. Too close for comfort! Harleys definitely look better on two wheels
Hanging back a bit also improves your visibility to oncoming cars preparing to make a left turn. When you are too close, the brain does not always register "two vehicles".
Hey Fred...Glad you are Ok...forget the bike HD will make more. But like Gumby said "Welcome" to the "I crashed my bike and lived to tell about it" club. I am a platinum member The one thing I can definitely say about rash is that in the long run....road rash makes wearing a leather jacket comfortable on a hot Summer day.
As for the guy ragging on you about your crash....well maybe he has never made a mistake......yet.
The very best and most skilled riders I know have all crashed their bikes at one time or another. That is part of their education process and all take it VERY seriously as I know you now do. All of us realize how lucky we are.
Any suggestions for a mesh jacket that fits big boys? Since my accident, I've thought seriously about getting one. I didn't have road rash, but only by the grace of God.
Look at the HD Switchback- I think it will fit the big boys. It is very versatile and is the only Jacket I wear since going down. Does anyone know where to find a broken wing patch?? (I thunk I earned it)

So...who ****ed up here?...YOU for not paying attention to what is happning in front of you/YOU following too close/a combination of both?...not defending a dumb move by a cage in front of you but YOU are (mostly) in control of what happens in front of you...99% of the time the real danger comes from oncoming ,left ,right or rearward traffic...BTW..glad you are OK...
He probably already knows this...but thank god we have you to point it out and make him feel worse about it.
For hot weather, do get the mesh jackets and summer gloves - they work because I wear them for 80+ weather all the time and am comfortable. If it's over 100, time to park the bikes for me. DfredB, glad to see you are up and moving ahead. I'm glad you're sticking with the bike - that copper HD paint job is one of the best.
