A friend and I left out of Columbus GA last Thursday for Deals Gap and just got back yesterday. All in all it was a little over 1250 miles. Dragon's tail is a blast to ride. I made 6 passes over the weekend. With the reputation, I thought that the sport bikes would be a problem but they were not, most were respectable. LEO wasn't a big problem either. People were good about warning you where they were and not too early as to take away from the experience. We stayed in a cabin in Big Ridge State Park which is on hwy 61. Hwy 61 has some uphill hairpins that are 1st gear turns and alot of fun. Hwy 61 got me thinking, I did not see many locals at Deals Gap. I bet they were riding the roads only they know about. Coming home we rode US129 south to Hwy 19. That is some beautiful country.
Did you get a chance to do the Cherohala Skyway? Living in N. GA I have done a few day trips so far this summer and have to say that if you don't get up this way often you should try the Cherohala as well, it is beautiful country. Another nice ride that is a bit closer is Wolf Penn gap. Not as populated as the Dragon (most days). And has some serious turns.

I did not get a chance to do Cherohala Skyway. We rode from Deals Gap Motorcycle Resort to Bryson City then to Cherokee up to Newfound Gap and down to Gatlinburg over to Norris TN where we were staying. It sure is nice up there and I plan on going again before it gets too cold. The ride down from Newfound Gap to Gatlinburg was fun but too many cars to push it much.
I just realized you are from Smith Station. I used to live in Columbus and my next door neighbor just moved to Smith Station. Wow, what a small world.
Smiths Station Alabama by way of FT Benning GA. When I came to FT Benning in 1991 and you told me that I would still be here in 2009 I'd have told you you were crazy.
