Default Coasting Down Hill

I have gotten into a habit over the past few weeks in COASTING down Hill with the motor off and out of gear.
I ride every day to work 44 miles round trip. I go up and over a mountain pass about 9000 feet climb to the valley floor at 4700ft. I can coast and get up to about 70mph.

Does enyone know if this is harmfull ??
When I start the bike up again. I wait till I am going slow until I upshift to 4th or 5th gear and let the clutch out.
It's no big deal and seems like it's okay to do this.

I thought I would ask some of you.
Thanks
E...

Good question. I'll be watching this one too. I'd guess that it won't hurt anything, but since it's air-cooled, I'd say let it idle downhill & you won't have to fire it up again at the bottom. (You coast downhill in your car with the engine running. Right? I do.) Maybe I'm wrong -- maybe I'm right. I dunno! Let's see if somebody has experience with this.

I would think that with the clutch in it makes no difference when you start the bike. I can't think of anything mechanical that would be affected. However, doing that once in a while might give a cool sensation, but I wouldn't personally do it regularly. What are you saving, a dollar in gas or something? And you are potentially risking being distracted or making a mistake in starting it or something. It just seems like another distriction when you are still going 55-60 mph. Besides, who can hear your loud pipes then? Just my .02

Another thing. Maybe you'd want to keep the engine on in case there's an idiot on the road (but I doubt that would EVER happen!) and you have to make some kind of evasive move to get out of the way, or something.

I would do that when I was in Denver last year, it was kinda cool just cruising through only hearing the air moving past you. Kinda like riding a gold wing!

Georgia Overdrive... is illegal...Many years ago a codriver got a ticket for this. Can't remember what the actual infraction was.
How is the transmission lubricated? Is the proper lubrication done by the input shaft (motor) spinning? If the motor is off would the output shaft sling enough oil to provide proper lubrication?

You got to be kidding. running with out power is dangerous. That is the kind of thing we did when we were 16 yr old and had no sense at all. Keep the motor runnin and the bike in gear.

OK, I know that was a little reactive and the silence with only the sound of the wind is real Zen like but dropping 4500 feet off a mountain pass @ 70mph, coasting?

Think about it.

Really it's no big deal. No cars no traffic.... very peaceful.
I will be on the road again in 20 mins. I may get the chance to coast again.

I not looking for answers if it's safe or not. What is safe to me may not be safe to you.
The question is is it okay to Coast with the motor off??

+1 on the power to the rear wheel to maintain control. You are probably riding on the edge of maintaining control of the bike. Sorta like powering through a curve to maintain better control versus coasting or braking.

I get that and I imagine as an adult you get to make that choice. It sounds like there might be tranny lube issues, but in neutral I don't know why. As for me, the biggest concern would not be power to the wheel, but the fact that all those little critters can't hear you coming. I was out jogging and one of those electric cars almost nailed me cause you couldn't hear it coming up from behind.
