I have a 1993 FLHS, it's actually a police model, but its pretty much the same thing with all the police gear taken off and painted. Will it be that much lighter than a ultra? I like it alot, alot of people think the guages are pretty unnattractive, but I think it looks pretty good with a windshield on it and a chrome headlight surround. I've seen a few with a painted or matte finish around the headlight and I don't like that look. They are a bit more reasonably priced than an ultra of the same year. They are essentially a road king with fork mounted gauges.
I am coming in late to this thread, but to echo what some others have said......if down the road you just cannot ride on two wheels...GO FOR THE SIDECAR!
Everytime I see any bike with a sidecar, I just think it is very cool looking.
HOLD ON JUST A DAMM MINUTE! I saw a guy at the Lynchburg, Tennessee rally this year riding with one leg! No $hit! One leg! If this guy can do it with just one leg, surely you can do it with one and a half......
OK, lets make it clear. I did not give up!!! I have not taken the HMO lying down, I am fighting with them. I am giving up the Ultra for a lower center of gravity ride. I do not intend to not ride. I like my wife to ride with me, so I am actively looking for a different bike. My wife and I have tried out a couple of bikes and I dont seem to have a problem if there is no tourpack or fairing. So I am looking into a RK or something simular.
Cowboy, I know where you're coming from. I'm 72 and I got to a point where I had to "downsize". Over the years I've ridden the biggest out there. About 3 months ago I came back to Harley (from a BMW) and bought a 1200 C Sportster. It's the smallest bike I've owned in years and to my total surprise it's the most "fun" bike I've owned in years. I forgot what it was like just to climb on a nice, low to the ground bike that had a little attitude.
Admittedly I've made it into a mini-dresser but it sure is a fun time in my life.

Well I suppose the Heritage would be a be a good alternative, you should go that route. It would be a hard adjustment going from an Ultra to a Sportster anyway, but the Heritage would be almost perfect and you still have the advantages of saddlebags, windscreen, etc...
