I wear 'em cause my girlfriend likes the way I look in them...plus keeps my knees from freezing (don't tell her that though). Also keeps the cuffs of my jeans from ending up above my knees when riding; what a pain in the a$$, plus I wear an ankle holster...
Kind of function over form; unless you are talking to my girlfriend...
I've never worn chaps or leather pants, but I have nothing against either. My hands always get colder than my ***** do anyway. Jeans and long johns keep me happy down to about 30 degrees. Below that, I wear a car with heated leather seats.
I've never worn leather overpants. I do, however, have some leather jeans. For me, they're quite comfortable. It doesn't get REAL hot here, and I have worn them through the summer and not felt much different than if were wearing denim. I also have some chaps. I'll wear those if I'm going somewhere that I'm going to be away from the bike and don't want to have people wondering why I'm wearing leather pants. Just throw the chaps in the saddlebag and I'm incognito. I'm not about to walk around in the mall wearing leather pants. That WOULD be gay. On the bike...it's all good. Wear what you gotta wear to get the job done.
chaps are considered gay because the gay population adopted them into their culture. John Wayne wore em while acting out a role as a cowboy from the 1800's. He also wore an ascot too, I suppose that wearing an ascot in todays times is not 'gay' because John Wayne did so. Sorry, chaps, fingerless gloves and, ascots are all a little gay. If you want to wear em so be it. I personally will not.

I bought a pair of inexpensive leather chaps to wear over jeans when it got cold. I reasoned that they were easy to put on/take off and could wear jeans. Problem is it really doesn't get cold enough here for me to look that gay.
There's nothing wrong with wearing chaps. If you wear them for thier intended purpose. I wear them to keep warm. If you are this guy then yeah...it's gay.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p6L5jtLJjK4&NR=1
They just look cool.. HA HA made you look. I wear them when its cold out. And mostly when it has gotten warmer during the day, chaps seem to have the ability to make you comfortable then, too. A lot of times if I have full gear on I really want to take my jacket off but am always OK with the chaps.
