Good answer. Back around 1979 I bought a set of chaps. They zipped on the inside. Had to be a contortionist to zip them up. Sent them back for a set of leather saddlebags. Which I still have and use. My last dealing with chaps.
I have some military camo CBN pants (chemical, biological, nuke) that are double lined that I wear when it is cold. Keeps all the parts warm.
As far as leather chaps looking gay. Gay is as gay does.

At 1PM I put on the chaps & took off for a 3 hour ride with a 45 minute beer stop Hope this helps you decide what is cool. I go with what works for me.

BTW, I wear them for warmth in cold weather. Most of the time I ride in jeans.
I agree

This thread is amusing in it's self...

One word- FUNCTION

Chaps were taken from the cowboy era, as some one else stated. They are not as likely to cause a person to sweat as much where heat is generated most by the human body. They were originally designed to protect one's legs from all types of abrasions and to keep dust from being 'soaked' up by the clothing. Ever seen a cowboy come into town after a hard drive and dust himself off? Jeans can 'breath' in the dust, so chaps helped there also.
Full leather pants protect and help keep body warmth in. In times or places where the weather is not so chilly, they can make you sweat in places which need to be 'aired'.
If you think you look gay, that's not my problem. If you think I look gay, come up to me and tell me so. We'll have a lengthy discussion about how I could give two rat's asses about what you think.
FUNCTION is the key here.

I'm tired of reading how gay chaps look. back in the day cowboys wore chaps Why? to protect thier legs. Jon Wayne wore chaps as well as Clint Eastwood and a long list of actors protraying cowboys. Are they gay looking? I think not.Being a biker its about doing your own thing and not carring that others think. Havent you seen the patch or heard of DILLIGAF.

I wear chaps for warmth during the cold, take them off when it warms up. There as praticle as gloves when its cold. As far as gay, I don't think so. Clint eastwood wore chaps on " Rawhide ". Hes not gay.

Leather pants are too hot, more restrictive, harder to get the right size, and they're very expensive.

So I wear Chaps and leave my azz hanging out as a sacrificial lamb in the event I go down. Nothing putty and skin grafts can't fix.

If I ride the air hit my legs and not my a$$. Chaps are made for keeping the weather off my legs. It can help protect my leg and as the temp goes up they don't get as hot as full leather pants will.

There's nothing wrong with wearing chaps. If you wear them for thier intended purpose. I wear them to keep warm. If you are this guy then yeah...it's gay..

Some of you are confused about leather OVERPANTS and just plain leather pants.
Overpants are chaps with evrything covered.

I use overpants Overpants
