Well, depending on how cold it is, my wife might wear both leather pants AND chaps. Chaps are easy to thrown on, and take off. Wearing leather pants over jeans would add a lot of bulk to the waist area, and probably not be too comfortable.
LOL! Me too! Riding to Hogrock a few weeks ago it was in the 40's when we left. I put on leather riding pants AND chaps! My legs were warm!
I prefer function over style and could give a ratsass what anyone thinks. But listening to everyone talking about how gay leather looks on a guy sounds to me like a bit of 'homosexual panic'......now cmon guys, you are exhibiting a bit of the 'limp wrist syndrome' when you try and twist the throttle, now aren't ya.... LOL
When it gets into the low 30s or below, I wear snowmobile bib overalls. (works for me) I think if anyone rides in cold weather,They should wear whatever keeps them comfortable and warm. I have been told that my bibs just aren't cool on a Harley. The only reply I had to that was, yep I know. just because we ride a Harley doesn't mean we have to follow any dress codes.
1. Limited protection. (You'll still cheese-grate your butt.)
We spend more time riding than sliding on our butts (hopefully), so, the protection chaps most often offer is against small road debris that would whack your shins or knees.
Aside from the above functional reasons, I think there is another reason for many riders that wear chaps:
1. "Image" factor.
For some reason chaps are supposed to go with the "Harley Image"? You'll have to ask the HD long-timers as to "why".
If I was concerned with image, I *wouldn't* wear chaps. Don't know about the Harley image - when I started wearing them 20 or so years ago, I was riding a Honda.
I wear chaps (though I do prefer how they look on the fairer sex). Never tried leather overpants (price, practicality, etc.). I'm still trying to cobble together decent riding gear for all seasons/weather that I'm on the road (can't afford to just buy what I want when I want it).
I believe the OP was talking about Leather OVERpants. Not leather pants.
I recently bought a pair of Redline leather Overpants.
They're fully lined, zipper down each leg and velcro at the bottom.
They're very east to get on and off.
The whole term 'assless chaps' pisses me off.
ALL chaps are assless, STFU. /rant
Anyway, been wearing my OVERpants to work for the past week or so.
They're very comfortable and once I'm inside and warmed up I take them off.
I can be pretty discreet and take them off at my desk.
