Default As people have already said....

... if someone wants it bad enough, or is inclined to vandalize it, they will. I live in downtown Toronto and have a driveway but don't have a garage. Not the worst city by far for crime but we have our share and a fair number of suspect looking peeps out on the streets at night. I have my bike covered (no-name cover), cabled (wheel and frame), disk locked and an alarm system on her. She's usually blocked in by my Jeep when i'm home as well. No problems to date. I'm hoping there's easier pickings for them to go after.

I agree if they want it they will just take it.

Do the Disc lock as they are visible and the random thief will move on to the next one.

Get an Alarm system for but no siren and a Pager this will work for if your home so you can take Pictures and have proof of whoever is messing with it. Sirens only **** your neighbors off .

Then the one thing that will only help the police or in court is set up a simple Web cam if you have direct view of it. This is great as you can get it cheap run it for free and have it record everything. .

Wow that's a lot of security. And of course I will think about where I will park it before I bring it home (which is not gonna happen before 6 months anyway). This is why I'm asking now

For those that live in a big city, where do you park your bike when not home? Like if you go to work with it, do you park your bike in between two cars or on the sidewalk if this one is big enough not to bother pedestrians?

There are parking spots specifically designed for motorcycles in DC but there are not a lot of them...

Rent a bay at a mini-storage facility.

It may be a little inconvenient to have to drive to get your bike, but it is more likely to be there when you go to ride it.

+1

$50/month for a locked 5' x 10' storage space makes it easier to sleep at night. Plus you will get a better insurance rate keeping it under lock & key as opposed to right on the street.

I live in a gated apartment complex with a gated parking garage. My bike has Roadlok and Lojack. Roadlok basically serves as a fancy padlock for the front end so nobody can wheel the bike away, but Lojack is nice. It notifies you if you bike is ever stood up or moved without your key within 30 feet of it by calling you, texting you, e-mailing you, whatever. If your bike is moved or stolen Lojack guarantees they will recover it for you or they will pay you for the bike + $5000. They have recovered bikes in as little as 2 minutes before (guy that stole it was across the street gasing up when police responded to GPS beacon). I also get 20% off my insurance for having it, so the $800 one-time price tag will pay for itself in about 3-4 years.

Neither of these can prevent stupidity/valdalism.... if you can't get a private garage have a good insurance policy with a low deductible for comprehensive coverage.

Ride an old Honda until you can afford a place with a garage, you'll sleep better.
