it has been freakishly cold here in the atl the last couple weeks. but i have been riding anyway. i don't have all the cold weather gear, but i did just pick up a balaclava made out of this space age breathable fiber, and thought i would pass along how good they work. my face and neck were really getting cold without it, but man this thing works. got it from the hundred dollar store for about 24 bucks i think. only thing i need now is some long johns.
are you folks riding in the cold or waiting for warmer days?
I ride year round. I have a first gear pair of winter cover alls which are great and a widder vest/gloves for the really cold days.
I dont joy ride much just ride to work and back.
right on. i usually don't get to ride to work that much, as i need my car for tools, laptop, etc..., so i joyride every chance i get! the mountains up north of atlanta are just awesome for riding too, so there's that.
Riding cold, at this point I'm used the cold. Not even prepared, since I work at an office, I need to wear slacks, and well, no long johns under. I wear dressy socks, so imagine how much they cover. On top just a shirt, scarf, and jacket. Sometimes leather, or on other occasions my cotton army jacket. I'll wear a bandana to cover lower half of the face. The daily commute is 7 miles from home to work. On highway trips I'll wear my Biltwell Novelty Helmet, yup, Novelty haha Note that I hate the cold weather, but I got used to it. Everyone tells me I'm crazy for driving my scoot on these occasions, but really, I don't have a choice. I gave my car to my little sis, so yeah. Don't regret it one bit, love to ride, even if it's cold like it's been, or even if it rains while it's cold.
Coldest I've ridden here is about 20 degrees, I didn’t feel my fingers for about an hour after that ride. The norm is about 30-40 now, but like I said, got used to it.
I took a $1 knit cap from Walmart and cut a slit in the top of it so it's just like a tube now. I pull that down around my neck and it makes all the difference in the world for cold-weather riding. I just ordered a windshield for the bike yesterday and I'm thinking that will help a lot, too. I've been riding over 20 years now (in NC) and have NEVER winterized a bike yet.
cold rain is the worst, no doubt. i dont know if its like this for everybody else, but for me, i can do alright if my hands are cold or my face or neck. but as soon as my feet get really cold i am DOOMED. nothing more miserable than being one hour into a three hour ride home and the sun is starting to go down and your feet are already cold.
