I was riding with a group of Six Bikers and their wives on new Years day on a two lane road in Lucerne Valley, our lead rider saw a car stop in the lane to turn left, we slowed down and were stopped before the car turned left. The fifth bike in the group noticed too late that we had stopped and lost control, he and his wife were thrown from the bike. The husband walked away with minor bruises however his wife died on the scene.
I rode past a similar accident last year on the way to the Grand Canyon and just want every one to be extra careful when riding in a group. The temptation to enjoy the view can be just enough of a distraction to cause a fatality. I am also wondering if installing a brake light flasher might have helped avoid the accident, I will be ordering one tonight and am encouraging all my friends to do the same.
Gee, thats an acident you never want to hear of, and to be with the couple. Feel for the husband, he'll deal with this for a long, long, time. Prayers for all
That has to be everyone's worst nightmare. I know it's mine. Another reason why I avoid riding in groups. If I'm going to go down, it isn't going to be because of someone else's moment of inattention.
So very sad that a happy event had a tragic ending. I strongly dislike group rides because there are often inexperienced riders in the group that don't know what to do in an emerency situation or don't have the skills to avoid something like this happening. I personally do not agree with riding 2 seconds apart. Many riders are older and their reflexes are simply not 2 second reflexes.
