Whats Up, I could use some help (advice) for my 88 softail custom. Lately I have noticed that when I back off on the throttle that there is a whine sound comming from the bottom end. It really doesn't matter which gear I am in, and it only is happening when I back out of the throttle. No vibration and it upshifts and down shifts with no problems. Primary has just been changed, nothing strange in the oil. Belt tension is right on. All feels "OK" just a whine. At cruise speed in all gears all is "OK" only when I back out of it at any speed and it is heard all the way down in all gears?? I could sure use any help or ideas that you might have. I love my ride and want to get her fixed. You take care of her and she will take care of you.
Thanks in advance for your help. FxstsTwo@yahoo.com---Roger
Brake rotor? Different rotors have different drill patterns and some make a funny whine. Can't hear it unless you're off the gas. Not for sure, but could be.
Just out of curiosity, I'd pop the top tranny cover off and have a look at the gears. Not specifically concerning bike trannies, but all gears tend to wear on the side of the teeth which get the most use. You stated your bike is an 88, not sure if you meant the year or the cubes. Sounds like a good possibility to me...
The main drive gear bearing can also make that sound when it gets worn, especially since the sound is heard in each gear.
Then too, if the primary sprockets and chain are severely worn, a similar sound can occur. Although usually this may be accompanied by other 'clicks and chunks' as the chain tries to ride on top of worn teeth. I know you said you 'changed the primary' but you didn't mention exactly what was changed. Just an after thought.
Thanks Guys, This gives me a place to start. karlmdog, now that you mention it seem to start after the brake rotors were drilled. Crok, by saying 88 I ment 1988, sorry I should have clarified. I will pop the cover and take a look. She has 39,000 miles on her, just thought I should mention this. No clicks or clunks. I have been paying alot of attention when I ride to see if there are any other symptoms. When I said changed the primary I ment that I changed the oil in the primary and went through the old oil to see if there were any clues there. I even used a magnet just in case. Going down the road she is as smooth as can be, no other strange sounds or symptoms. It is kind of hard to tell just where it is coming from. My old lady seems to think it is coming from the back wheel. karlmdog That would confirm what the old lady thinks. Thanks to both of you for taking the time to respond to my problem. When I get into it your ideas will give me some things to keep an eye out for.-----Roger
