Just like they did with cars 25 years ago

In the 5 boros and Long Island cars go on a dyno with a road map video to be driven at different speeds plus entire inspection is videotaped (so you cant use another car to pass a car for instance a 99 camaro with a carbed 454)

Look at the magazines with aftermarket parts disclaimers i.e 49 state compatible

The MOCO is taking their a$$es away from government fines

Plus I am no accountant but I gotta believe the make more profit on t shirts and NON -engine related parts then SE II mufflers and other assorted SE items

Wont be long before we see some heavy emission standards on bikes

Even friggin lawnmowers now have cats

While this may be true, I'd call it BS. The EPA cannot impose a lock down on motorcycles when cars can be modified (keeping their poll cntrls of course). They may try, but I would be one of the first to fund a lawsuit against them, because they would have NO legal grounds for that, as long as pollution targets were being met.

Whatever the Moco does not sell/offer, the aftermarket companies will pick up on. Instead of having the dealer do a download and pipes, you may have to get it mail order and do it yourself. Only snag is as said earlier, if they do mandatory sniffer tests. We had to do that in MI a while back on cages, but state discontinued it. I don't believe they will go back to doing it again, even for bikes.

In VA they run the cagers up on a dyno of sorts and take readings at different speeds and have the sniffer pipe in the exhaust, and the results are transmited directly to the DMV folks. No emission test, no registration. This is done every other year on the emissions, but you still get the safety inspection every year. For bikes there is only a yearly visual from what I understand, just don't go in blowing all sorts of smoke out the exhaust. I think that the orginal poster may be correct unfortunately since ther are more vehicles on the road the governments nedds to do something about this they feel.

I'm thinking that things will end up just as they are with autos now. There will be performance parts as soon as the aftermarket folks can get things sorted out and get them EPA certified.

H-D isn't dumping all the performance upgrades...they're just scaling back to the ones that they have certified (or are able to be certified) with the EPA. The loud exhaust parts were the first to go but, there are still performance upgrades you can buy from H-D.

my $0.02... Don't get your knickers in too much of a twist on this. It is, has been, and always will be illegal to muck with the exhaust of your car. Obviously there are exceptions with years of make on the vehicles... When I replaced the exhaust on my truck it was technically illegal. However... I can pass a smog test better now than I could with the stock system.

AND... in our state they do not use the sniffers anymore... They use the OBDII port. So... in order to bust all of the bikes they would have to go back and refit all of the stations to support the sniffers again... And that just aint going to happen. And as far as I know (and I could be wrong) there is no OBDII port on the bike and even if there is you have take the bike apart to get to it... I am not letting the guy that the jiffy lube take my seat off... The guys at Harley have enough trouble taking it off without scratching something.

So Harley is not going to make exhaust mods or other engine mods anymore... big deal. Someone else will... And whatever restrictions they put on the mufflers someone like V&H will figure out a way to get around it.

Somewhere someone will figure out a way to get us our pipes and other stuff. For every law there is a loophole.

And I think the dealers just don't want to deal with the headaches anymore... Just means Indy shops are about to start doing really well.

Could always buy a bike from an Indy shop... They are not held to the same requirements as the mass producers if I recall correctly. Buy an custom job with dual carbs and they probably cannot do a damn thing.
