Had a candid conversation with the local Harley Service Rep last weekend. What a bunch of spin these guy put out. I'll keep the 05' as long as I can keep her runnin. As far as the local stealer is concerned, it ain't worth much on a trade anyway.
While this may be true, I'd call it BS. The EPA cannot impose a lock down on motorcycles when cars can be modified (keeping their poll cntrls of course). They may try, but I would be one of the first to fund a lawsuit against them, because they would have NO legal grounds for that, as long as pollution targets were being met.
In California there is not many modifications you can do to your car that will not affect your ability to pass emissions. Just went through this with a car my son bought....15 year old car that runs great and emissions were darn close. Couldn't get it to pass smog the way it sat, though I'm sure just some tuning would have done it.
People he bought it from had changed the throttle body, which caused the engine light to come one. So to pass smog, no matter what it meant, the engine light could not be on (yeah I know pull the wire and no problem) that was the first problem. Then because we changed the throttle body back to the right one the ERG valve of course croaked. There were 2 types theat went on that car one for $160 and the CA one for $325....guess which one ours was.....sigh.
Now you can modify a new car and run around that way for about the first 5 years or so....they do not usually require smog checks in that time. You should keep your original equipment though because when it comes to passing smog you will probably have to put that equipment back on. Cars over 25 or 30 years old (depends on how they are feeling that year) don't require smog and can be modified easier.
Why laugh when you both have 06s subject to same regulations? Am I missing something? I just do not get this the sky is falling attitude. Heard a lot of the same crap concerning autos. Yea we all know they will not haul a$$ anymore because of emissions Next yall be saying that I gotta go outside and pull the supercharger of my mustang.

I am personally laughing because this is probably the same discussion that comes up every new model year... Everyone starts freaking out thinking the new stuff can't get changed.
Personally i think it is a conspiracy to get people to hurry up and mess with their stuff before a deadline or some nonsense like that.
I can guarantee you that I would have no problem going out tomorrow, buying an 07 Street Glide, and putting new pipes or whatnot on it.
And I am not putting ANY of my cars back to stock... too much like work. =)
Your bike falls into the same catagory, unless it's over 27 yrs old, don't laugh.
Whether the law has been enforced or not, tampering with the emissions-controls components of your motorcycle has been illegal for 27 years.
And thereâs nothing in the new EPA regulations that expands those anti-tampering restrictions to include things like handlebars or shocks or brakes or whatever else Mr. Know-It-All in the parking lot might tell you.
Here are the exact words from the EPA on this subject: âThe new emission standardsâŚdo not change this âtamperingâ prohibition, which has been in the Clean Air Act for more than 20 years. Part manufacturers are still free to make parts, dealers are free to sell and install parts, and owners are free to customize their motorcycles in any way, as long as they do not disable emission controls or cause the motorcycle to exceed the emission standards.â
