In VA they run the cagers up on a dyno of sorts and take readings at different speeds and have the sniffer pipe in the exhaust, and the results are transmited directly to the DMV folks. No emission test, no registration. This is done every other year on the emissions, but you still get the safety inspection every year. For bikes there is only a yearly visual from what I understand, just don't go in blowing all sorts of smoke out the exhaust. I think that the orginal poster may be correct unfortunately since ther are more vehicles on the road the governments nedds to do something about this they feel.

06 FXDWGI which I intend to keep forever now
That must be NoVA - not really Virginia. We only have the yearly safety inspection. Takes longer to remove and apply the new sticker than doing the inspection at my local mechanic. I sure hope we don't have emissions testing in Richmond, but it has been rumored to be coming for some time.

heard it will also be illegal to install non-HD chrome, or to use air in the tires that hasn't been cleaned by a EPA compliant device to reduce rubber emissions.
All your'e really saying is that the harleyshop wont do mods starting next year?
Theres always been stiff fines for modifing exaust systems, try to get a shop to take off your cat converters. But there is a shop here that still will do it. they just wont give you receipts.
I bet that will be the case if HD does stop mods.
the fines would prolly relate to older mods to ifthe epawas to try to hold our feet in the fire.

OK, from a reliable source:
Starting in 2008 all bikes from HD will be no longer subject to modification. If you do modify, you can be fined up to $25K; Which equates to 5K to you and 20K to the shop doing the mods. If you do not name the shop, then the entire 25K is on you. HD is no longer going to offer downloads and as is already obvious the Screaming Eagle line is history. Now you can call BS, and you may be correct, but if you look at the way things are going down, it is not hard to believe. The 07's are throatier for a reason. This came from a long standing HD dealer and I think it is creditable. OK, go ahead and flame me. We'll see in the end. I think pre 08 models will be worth their weight in gold! And if the 07's prove faulty........ be glad you have the old reliable 88!
