They loosen up a bit over time, but it should not squeez your head by any means. Don't wanna be a bobblehead on the highway, so snug is good.

Wow, thanks guys. That is a lot of info to help me out. I went to the try on helmets and decided to pick up a full face helmet for winter rides. I went with an HJC FS-10 in medium. Mediums sizing ends at 7 1/4 and large starts at 7 3/8 (my size). I opted for the medium for a better fit when the pads compress. I feel like a tuna in a can, though. I hope it opens up a bit. I also tried on a Fulmer V2 in a medium thinking that my large may have been the wrong size and the medium felt better around the crown, but it put a lot of pressure on my cheeks and back of my neck. The shell is sleeker, but pads on the large is better. I've ridden with a skid lid before, great open feel but didn't feel safe. Wasn't planning on a full face, but all the neoprene and bandanas don't keep me warm enough at night. The HJC is on the heavy side (3.5 lbs.) and I hope it doesn't break my neck. I'll use it this weekend and keep you all updated. Thanks for all the advice, ride safe out there.
I'm confused. In your first post you say that you wouldn't wear a helmet if you didn't have to and in this post you say you don't feel safe with just a skid lid?
Don't worry, your full face will not break your neck. That's just an "urban myth".

+1 try them on.. Find a saleperson who knows helmets.. It should be snug but wear it for awhile in the store. I just did this on a day a week ago. I want a replacement helmet. I knew I wasn't going to buy it that day. However the guy at the shop still spent an hour with me trying on helmets. I am going back in a few weeks to get the one that fit best.
Lots of things can be bought site unseen but helmets are not one of them.
