Default Helmet Help!

I'm sure some are laughing because I have to wear a helmet. If I could, I wouldn't...the Governator of California says I have to. Now here's where I need your opinions. I wear a 7 3/8 in a pro baseball hat. I measure 58.5cm around my head. I have a Fulmer V2 in large and it feels a bit loose, I've tried on a medium and it's a bit tight. I'm looking to buy a BELL open face helmet and 7 3/8 and this is where the large size starts until 7 1/2. A medium is 7 1/8 to 7 1/4. I want to be safe and comfortable...and not look like a giant q-tip. Advise?

If you're trying on a new helmet, you want it to be a touch to the tight side at first. The foam in the helmet will compress and settle in over time and you'll ultimately end up with a better fitting helmet. If it's nice and comfortable from the beginning, it'll wind up being to the loose side for best protection once it wears in. Your description of the large and medium size Fulmers sounds to me like you'd be better off with the medium but of course, you're the one who has to make that decision.

Good luck,
Steve R.

PS: One easy test with a new helmet is simply to put it on and shake your head back and forth. If the helmet moves on your head, "any at all," it's too loose!

^^^ He said it perfectly.

I recently bought a Shoei FF in a L, sent it back to get the M that I originally thought was too tight. After 3 rides with the M, it feels great.

I just got myself a Daytona cruiser-They claim its the smallest DOT helmet.I compared it to my wife's Bell helmet and it is a lot smaller.Got mine form helmets etc. $46.99 with shipping $59.98 B.T.W. the Bell Logo on her helmet is not a sticker that comes off.

Some helmet makers like Shoei and Arai offer different thickness padding. That way you could probably get a Medium and use thinner padding. There is a lot of info and videos on the web on helmets and sizing. Check webbikeworld, helmetharbor, and a few others.

If you'd rather not wear a helmet, why not just get yourself a good skid lid?

That's what I do to get around the helmet law, here in Japan. Cops don't even care. Feels like I'm not even wearing anything - makes for a very refreshing ride. Of course I don't know how legal they are in CA, or if you'll get ticketed for wearing one.

You know what I am going to say - My honest opinion is if you come off with no lid - You possibly die - Buy a good helmet - IN fact break the bank for one as you only have one head - Arai , Shoei are the best out there and the ultimate is of course Schuberth.

OH BOY. Put a F**kin lid on and squash it down, strap it up and live with it. Yeah it might be a little snug at first but if Ya' gotta have one -- well "Ya gotta have one. Look at what everyone else around you has on and ask questions.

I've found that differnet brand helmet by sizes fit differently.
