Default Harley "Custom" Paint

Does anyone know what exactly the MoCo means by "Custom Color" (like this year's Merlot/Cherry Sunglo or White Ice Pearl/Black Ice Pearl)? I know that they can be ordered only for a limited time, but is the number of bikes with a given color also restricted? If so, any idea how many?

Inquiring minds want to know

Well, in the paint world, a custom color is just any color you make that is not a standard color. Realistically though, more often when the term "Custom Color" is used, it refers to a paint which has "custom additives", such as crushed glass or mirror, flakes, crystals, etc. Candy colors are generally considered custom as well, due to the two stage base coat and the fact that application is a strong factor in the final appearance (which makes matching it later much more difficult).

Quantities of custom colors are usually limited due to higher cost compared to standard colors (even though it may be true in some instances that a particular custom color (maybe a black) may be less expansive than a particular standard color (maybe a red).

Harley releases colors every few months that are never available again. Usually it's a three or four month release. I had one of the '99 custom color releases on my Heritage. Whenever I see that color I know that it's on a '99 no matter what model it's on. It was a light teal color with white. I forget the exact color name but it was unique.

Mine was a Harley custom numbered set #64 of 200. I didn't buy it new but the original owner gave me the original sales ticket and I believe it was either an extra $2000 or so

Seafoam. That was the teal color. Wow, the brain still works. Sort of.
