heavily customized maxi scooters are a really big deal in Japan especially. Some of those folks have more $$$ tied up in their scooters than a lot of people do here on their Harleys.
As for them being "real motorcycles"...don't kid yourself. they are very much "real" motorcycles, very capable of speeds at or above what Harley will do; they can move, right quickly too.
My wife has a Yamaha Majesty and it's done many 500 mile + days, gets better mileage than my sportster, carries a hell of a lot more under the seat than I can with saddlebags and she stays a lot drier in a rainstorm than I do.
