Cool road trip needs

Ladies and Gentlemen... Im planning my first "real" road trip from WI to MI using the ferry across Lake Michigan in June. Im thinking Im in need of a GPS and rain gear to be safe... I wont have saddle bags (I ride an 07 street bob) but Ill have a back pack and a pillan with a sissy bar to strap a small to med. amount of luggage... any recommendations on a GPS mount\power supply (Im looking to remain as bare bones as possible) and what do you recommend as far as rain gear that will pack very small? And Ill open this up for any other recommendations you have for a first time road trip... I do plan on bringing a basic tool kit but am looking for everyone else's expertise as what to have with me.... Im pretty much as green as it gets so Ill take any and all advice.... thanks!!!

GPS, Im not sure on product quality but you want one that can take mapping upgrades. For your scoot, a tire plug kit & a small compressor that will plug into battery power. Black tape & minimum tools like vise grips, a few allen keys etc.
A note in your pocket that has your blood type, contact info, meds you are on etc.....Just in case!
Have a good trip!
Hatch.

I never bought one, I just velcro'd mine to my fuel tank So I have no idea what works best. I put mine away when it starts raining though. I wonder if a marine sales place would have water resistant ones??

A GPS is certainly not a neccessity, but if you're set on having one go for it. I've been from the west coast to the east coast three different times on three different routes, as far north as Edmonton and as far west as Vancouver Island BC. Triple A maps are all that is necessary. All of the major companies, HD, First Gear, Tour Master etc make rain gear that folds into itself making a very small package, look into these and pick a set that suits you and your needs, try them on as they are sized differently. A tire repair kit and a small tool kit are desireable items to take with you. You should also check into a roadside towing package and don't forget the cell phone. You don't say when you are going so take both, a heavy and a light jacket. Make sure they are big enough to layer clothing underneath so you can stay warm. Put a drink holder on your bike, they are cheap, to carry a bottle of water with you to prevent dehydration. Get off the bike every 75-100 miles and take a short break. If you go to a sporting/hiking/camping store, purchase a couple pair of micro mesh underware, you can wash them out every nite and they will be dry in the morning, just alternate the pair and you will have fresh shorts every day. Carry some snacks like trail mix and/or jerky with you to hold you over between meals or just in case you get stuck somewhere with no services. Make sure you have a good credit card with you in case of a breakdown and emergency repair. These a just a few of the things I carry on my trips. I hope this helps. Good luck and have a safe trip! Let us know how it turns out.

I got a 2" tank lift from jackyl a couple of weeks back than I still need to install, but I had him weld a small angle off of the top of it and on there I drilled a hole through it and got a ram mount for my gps (garmin nuvi 205w) which will end up sitting right in front of the tank, Im hoping to have time to mount it up tomorrow or Friday and I'll post pictures

As far as GPS goes I think you should buy one that is made for boaters. You might want to invest in a fish finder also so you can watch the fish when you are riding on the ferry boat. Make sure your rain gear is good quality as I hear it can get pretty windy out there on the lake.

You also might want to consider getting a good life jacket in case they don't have your size on the boat.

Have fun and watch out for tailgating walleye.
