My Rip saws mount in the rear like Im assuming most exhausts do... three bolts holding the brackets to the bike then two bolts attach the bracket to the pipes. My issue is with the lower of the two bolts that connect the bracket to the pipe. Its a half inch nylon insert nut (from what I can see anyway... that attaches to a flat head bolt that is somewhat "captured" My problem... the nut is loose... I backed it off a bit and dropped a few drops of blue loctite on the threads and went to tighten it back up (it had loosened up before) as I was tightening it up it never snugged tight it just kept turning... it was tight for a few days... now its loose again but my problem is that all the nut does is spin... it does not tighten or loosen... just spins... the bolt is NOT turning... did the loctite screw up the nylon in the nut? Now the question is... how the hell do I get the nut off without screwing up the bolt? I REALLY REALLY dont want to have to take the entire exhaust off... anyone have any magic tips? Thanks!!!
Well I guess you've figured out that Locktite is not put on nylon lock nuts.
I'm betting that you will have to cut the bolt in half to get the nut out. Without seeing a picture of the situation it's not easy to give you a solution but I bet you could cut the bolt off in place using a Fein Multimaster tool. There are several versions of this tool that range in price from about $300 down to $30. It is made by Fein, Rockwell, Sears, dremel, and Harbor Freight even has a cheap version. There is a wide, thin, spatula looking attachement for this thing that should get the bolt cut in half.
You might still be hosed in regards to getting the captured bolt head out though.
Thanks for the reply... think its possible to cut the NUT off the bolt instead of cutting the bolt? What if I torch the nut in an attempt to "melt" the nylon? Am I crazy here?
UPDATE!!!! I got the nut and bolt off and obviously need a new one of both... Im going to head down to the hardware store and pick up the stuff I need... but the question is.. do I replace the nut with another nylon lock nut or go reg. steel nut and use loctite? Looking at the nut and bolt that came off it does appear that the BOLT stripped and NOt the nut.... even though its tough to tell since the nut is pretty messed up after fighting to get it off... Should I upgrade to grade 8? Sorry for all the dumb questions Im still pretty green with all this stuff... thanks and Cheers!!!
