Default head bolt unthreaded

Changing to a 2 in 1, while pulling the nuts off the flange on the front head the bolt unthreaded. The nut looks like it was peened so it would not come off the bolt. Should I remove the old nut and then lock tight the bolt to the head?

I think you'll have a hard time removing the nut from the stud without messing up the threads. I'd just reinstall it the way it came out, being careful not to cross thread it, or just get a new stud & nut.

You can try this. Get 2 nuts and thread on the inside of the stud, part that came out of the thread. Tighten then together snugly and clamp it in a vice. remove the flange nut from the stud. Might be able to do this and not screw up the threads on either end of the stud. If not, see above post

I will try the idea with adding extra nuts. I could Jam the two together, hold that with the vice and pull the one on the end of the bolt.

Any thoughts as to useing locktight on the bolt to make it stay in the head??

I would just go buy a new stud at the HD dealership & get another nut.

They're not much money. Every time I have the exhaust off the head on my motorcycle I install new nuts. Cheap insurance for the next time.
