Well I must say there is a lot of talk on this subject but nobody seems to know what the official word is! I have heard that you can add the stage 1 upgrade and that the new ECM will automatically adjust accroding to the upgrades ( Which makes sense, all new automobiles will do that I just put a new borla cat back and air cleaner assy. on my truck and it said in the instructions to pull my ECM fuse to reset it and it will automatially make the neccesary changes) and I have also heard different! I think I might wait to do the stage 1 until next spring on my night train when I will have more options and somebody will know WTF is going on!
From the famous words of Master Po: You must have Patientce Grasshopper!
If that were the case I would think they would run into trouble with the EPA. I would also think that it would be hard to come up with a resettable ECM that could detect what you have for a set-up. It would be cool though if all came through automatically with a programmable ECM that could be tweaked with different maps in the first place!
We need to get the local tech to fill us in on how the new ECM works.
Side note: On say the 1996 Volvo, the O2 sensors have direct input into the duration the injectors are actually opened. But.............. when you go above 4K then a pre-determined map in the ECM takes over, hence the need to be tuned even though you have O2 sensors. I don't know if this is how the HD ECM works, there are lots of options so without input from someone "In the Know" it's all guessing.
Harley has the stage 1 download available now along with se mufflers and breather. The 02 sensors on Harleys are narrow band, cars are wide band, therefore Harleys will change very little.
