Until recently i never even took my key with me. I dont have the alarm system on mine. Never used the key, never locked anything. A guy got his truck stolen in the parking lot at work a week or so back and since then i have tried to make the effor to at least bring the key, and try and remember to at least lock the forks, thankfully i work close enough to where the bikes parked to hear the loud sob start up and it has to come right past my building to leave..so i would know if someone decided to make off with it! My wife has the fob on hers, and man that thing is annoying especially when im trying to work on the stupid thing and it keeps flashing at me!
How bout losing the Key 200 miles from home? Had to stay in a motel for two days as my pretty po'd wife Fed-exd me another. What a boob I was! Of course it ALWAYS comes up at parties! Never live THAT down..been there cone that.
I like the auto set on the 09. I can pull up to a store, get off the bike & walk away. If someone tries to start it, nothing. It works so well that I added a Digital Guard Dawg to my 06 & if I walk more then 20' from the bike the starter is automatically disabled. Works flaweslessly & is independent of the factory alarm. Install took 5 minutes to install & I got a great deal on Ebay for it. It was used & I paid around 75. http://www.digitalguarddawg.com/product-demo.html
I got tired of that fob mess real quick. My bikes are insured.
I hear ya! That automatic system on the later bikes would drive me nuts! IMO, it's a selling gimmick...if thieves want it, they'll take it, as they don't usually ride 'em away anyways. None of those security systems are gonna keep 'em from tossing your scoot in the back of a truck.
On a related note, can those automatic systems be disabled, or converted to manual activation? If not, I don't see myself ever buying a bike that has it.
Never forgot the Fob at home, but went to the Nurburgring for a Harley event. A group of us went out near the control tower to watch some of the crotch rockets run the track. Found out they have a radio signal jammer in the race control tower. None of our late model Harleys would start. One guy didn't know his code, so we had to push his bike a few hundred yards away until his Fob worked.
