OK I may have a job 1700 miles away and all I have is an 04 Cadillac CTS 3.6 and "limited" cash to get me and some things there.
I found a class I hitch for my car that is rated at 2,000 lbs with a 200 lb tongue weight. I have access to a small boat trailer I can easily modify to fit my Road King. I don't see an issue balancing everything to stay under the 200 lb tongue weight.
Does anyone see any potential problems with this? I know I would want a wide wheel base on the trailer so the bike doesnt tip.
Its either this or fly back "when I can" and ride it there. 1700 miles would take a lot of stops with my tailbone and stock seat.
That should work. Just put some thought into how you will modify the boat trailer, i.e. make it sturdy enough to hold the bike securely. Even if you went over the gross trailer weight you'd still be ok. Just go easy.
I take that back, it's a 17 hour trip. 1148 miles from northern Indiana to Austin, TX.
I can get the hitch for around $150 and can install it myself in a couple hours including the wiring adapter.
The trailer mod sholdn't be too bad either since I have access to a plasma cutter and a good MIG welder.
I can't imagine the CTS not towing it. like's been said before, balance from and back and side to side is important. there are plenty of threads about tying a bike down and what kind of chock to use. 2 2x4s on either side of the front tire will suffice for a chock. I always put a 6x6 block under the frame (watch out for the jiffy stand mount) then pull the bike down solid to the block. it's not so hard on the front forks and makes the bike do well.
oh, WELCOME to Texas. you're gonna love the riding down here!!
