Hey all. i just got a 1999 roadking. its EFI. i am very familiar with carbs and no EFI experience. what would i take to convert to carb. is the efi reliable? how does it compare to carbed bikes. thanx
put some miles on her and figure out how you like the feel. if you like the carb type adjustment, Dobeck performance makes a f/i controller that adjusts the fi the same way you'd adjust the jets on a carb.
Gotta watch the year of the bike, tho - a buddy of mine wanted to change his 2008 to carb and as far as anyone could tell, it wasn't very doable due to some signal that comes from the crank/flywheel. I'm no mechanic so I don't know what that was all about - all I recall was that whatever this thing was, it made it next to impossible to switch things over. Anyway, sounds like your bike is earlier so shouldn't be an issue. FWIW - I had a '99EFI bike and I thought it was too notchy on the throttle. I've heard that's been fixed. Still would rather have my carb - so I'm with you, OP.
To answer the OP. Your bikes efi model had some issues. It was made by Weber I think. Some were hard starting, and/or erratic idling.
Can you take it back to carb. Sure if you have the ability to wrench, can figure out what to by pass and or replace in the electrical, and have the money.
Thundermax has a replacement setup for them. Everything in a kit. Suppose to wake up the MM bikes.
If you have problems I'd think about going this route.
I've had my fill with carbs. Rebuilt my last one I hope.

A carb is a compromise in fuel delivery at every RPM. An EFI system is mapped at every point in the rev range. That is why they burn cleaner, get better mileage and produce more power. Why would you want to switch back.
