I just finished adjustable baffles for 3" S&S shotgun slip ons. For these slip ons are open my Heritage makes a rolling thunder during the ride. But after 20 miles on the highway (including a helmet and earplugs) I hear birds singing during the ride. For I am sure that I have no flying passengers on my helmet it must be my ears, protesting the wall of sound during this 20 minutes or so. So I mounted the standard exhaust for my trip from Holland to Spain. For I don't want to have a permanent hearing damage and my girlfriend not too, it was really pleasant. But I missed the possibility to change my sound depending on the use of the bike. Showing off requires an other sound than cruising. I designed manually adjustable baffles which can be placed by any handy amateur. Using two spanners of 13 mm (yes, we live her in the metric part of the world) you can easily switch from open baffles to semi-closed or even to the touring position.
The principle is based on a mechanical diaphragm.
The only thing you will see is a central bolt and a spring in the centre of the tail. But I am working to hide this behind a central chrome cap. First I want to take some measuring in sound production in the several positions (full open, semi-closed or touring)
When I have the results I will be back...
One disadvantage: the adjusting can only be done with cold exhausts or with heat resistant gloves. But it saves hundreds of dollars compared with electronically or electrically adjustable valves in the slip ons..
Pics will follow if you are interested....
I just measured the sound levels.
Position 1: cruising position of the adjustable end baffle
On stationnairy rpms it produced 82-84 dBA. On cruising level (50-80 miles per hour) it produces 92 dB and opening throttle suddenly produces a deep, loud Harley roar of 96-98 dBA.
Position 2 Semi-open
Stationnary 92 dBA, cruising 96-98dbA en full throttle 102-104 dBA
Deep Harley sound
Position 3 Full open
No difference with the open 3" shotguns, in which the adjustable baffles are built in.
Very succesfull and I got already several questions for building and delivery of sets of these adjustable end baffles.
At this moment they are designed for 3" shotguns with straight end or slash ends.
Re-designing for 2,5" slip-ons is in progress
