Default New handlebar law in Indiana

Thought I would make a post out there for all out there that ride or will be riding in Indiana.

A new handlebar law becomes effective Thursday, July 1, 2010. Handlebars must be lower than the riders shoulders while seated on the bike.

I know this is standard in most states, but in Indiana I think it used to be they had to be under 15" or something like that, and even that wasn't enforced. Since it is a new law I'm sure it will be fresh on the Police officer's minds and they will be looking for it. So be careful out there, and don't let a ticket ruin your day!

My thoughts exactly. People ask me all the time if I get a lot of tickets for my apes, and I always say no because I don't ride like an idiot.

In MD it is 15" above the seat. Which makes most HD illegal from the show room floor. The only bikes that routinely have bars that low are the crotch rockets. Luckily it is never enforced.

Actually if MD went to a law that stated shoulder height I would be very happy, since I could probably put 16" apes on and still be in compliance.

By the way. This is also a big improvement for you guys. read your law: http://www.fastfreds.com/helmetlawmap/in-helmet-law.htm

YOu are the same as MD right now, 15" above the seat:

IC 9-19-7-2
Handlebars; brakes; footrests; lamps and reflectors
Sec. 2. (a) Except as provided in subsection (b), a motorcycle operated on the streets or highways by a resident of Indiana must meet the following requirements:
(1) Be equipped with handlebars that rise not more than fifteen (15) inches above the level of the driver's seat or saddle, when occupied.
(2) Be equipped with brakes in good working order on both front and rear wheels.
(3) Be equipped with footrests or pegs for both operator and passenger.
(4) Be equipped with lamps and reflectors meeting the standards of the United States Department of Transportation.
So in all, this is a big improvement for you. measure the height of your handlebars from your saet right now? are you in compliance? well if you sit upright on your bike and they are not above your shoulders you will now be ok.

A buddy of mine who works at the local Harley dealership bought used fatboy and the handle bars are higher than his Ultra. A state cop who had another car pulled over saw him at a stop light and then followed him to the dealership and wrote him a ticket.

Watch out for the new law.

Watch out for the new law.

why?

The new law is more lenient. If you sit up straight on your seat and your knuckles are below shoulder height on the bars you are OK!!!

15" above seat height (my current law) and YOUR OLD LAW says that your knuckles should be just above belly button height!!!!

which would you rather have!!

i give up.

figures Indiapolis (colts stealers)
