Default Alarm?

OK, so pardon my ignorance. just picked up an '08 Road King for my wife. Dark Blue Pearl, very sharp. When you sit on the bike the signal lights flash alternatley at an ever increasing speed. Then they stop. Then they start again. Once you start the bike all is good and get off the bike then all is good too. Got a black fob with the bike but since I'm and idiot and more excited about picking up the bike than asking questions, I never asked what the damn fob was for.

Since this forum seems to have many people who are much more knowledgable than I am, maybe someone can explain this to me. Is this part of the alarm system? Shouldn't there be an audible alarm as well? Or is it just a disabler?

I ride a 99 FLHT which doesn't have any type of security system, other than my dog, so this is new to me.

Thanks.

the security system you have with the fob, disables the ignition. it also flashes the lights if the bike is disturbed. Like everything else about Harley, you have to buy the add on siren (about another $100). it is actually more of a chirper, rather than a siren. it has a built in battery, so even if they unhook the battery cable, the siren/chirper still works.

lots of folks have opted to install a $5 siren from radio Shack. only down side, is it doesn't have a built in battery, and can be disabled by disconnecting the bike's battery cable.

Thanks. So it's a proximety thing? If the fob isn't near the bike you can't start it. I was playing around with it a bit to see how it works. As long as the fob is near the bike it will run. I don't think I'll bother with the siren.

Thanks again. Now I'm a little bit smarter.

did you get a manual with the bike? if so, i would suggest you read the section in it about the alarm. there is a procedure that you can use to start your bike in case the battery in the fob goes dead, or worse, you lose your fob. to go along with that, you set your own passcode to do it with.

if the dealer did not go over this with you, don't panic. you can retrieve the existing pin code, and then change it to something you want very easily. just make sure you are not sitting on the bike when you do it, the slightest movement messes up the procedure and you have to start over.

Your owners manual has the information on how to change the PIN number and start your bike incase the FOB battery goes dead, gets lost, damaged, etc..
If you don't carry the manual with you, you might consider scanning the pages and then printing them out for easy access once out on the road.

Nope didn't get a manual. I guess I'd better order one.

I'd suggest getting a shop manual also.
