I don't think a tip would be in order but if he/she has done a bit of good work for you sending in a lunch time pizza or maybe a 6 pack (if you know them to be beer drinkers) might be a sign of your appreciation. Christmas time is also a good time to recognize a mechanic, barber, etc who deserves a thank you for their service to you.
I spotted the mechanic who usually worked on my car at the dealer (lifetime oil changes) at a fast food place next to the dealership and I paid for his lunch. He was happy as could be and he always took a bit of extra care when servicing my 350Z. Everybody likes a pat on the back or a thank you for a job well done.
If they have done something out of the ordinary. Work late, get you done ahead of time, save you money or give you free parts (even used parts or take offs). Even if they do the job better than expected.
Then yes I tip. Usually round up to the next $20. Donuts, pizza, gift certificates are also acceptable. Anything that says thanks for going above and beyond.
