YUMA, Ariz. -- A Harrier jet coming in for a landing at the Marine Corps Air Station in Yuma, Arizona, has crashed in the backyard of a home about a mile from the base.
There are no reports of injuries on the ground. But the pilot was taken to the hospital with what appear to be non life-threatening injuries.
The jet was returning from a training mission carrying four 500-pound bombs and 300 rounds of 25-millimeter ammunition.
A Marine spokesman says two homes near the crash site sustained some structural damage after the aircraft burst into flames.
About 1,300 people in a one-mile radius around the crash site have been evacuated. A shelter has been set up at a nearby middle school.
A military explosives disposal team is dismantling the bombs so they can be removed.
This happened yesterday, I don't know the guy as he was in a different unit. Saw the parachute on the way into work. I don't have any details, though I'm glad noone was hurt. I guess one guy was in one of the homes and had "minor" injuries. The plane was on final to land back at the air station, and for whatever reason, the pilot deemed it neccesary to get out.
