It's a matter of instant gratification - I can either ride the sporty and try unsuccessfully to save the money for the bike I want, maybe for a few years- or I can get out from under the sportster, and ride the bike I really want while paying for it for the next 7 years

10000 miles on the '01 isn't bad at all IMO - I put that + on the 08 Sporty this year alone.

I really appreciate the opinions posted here. It helps to hear others' views...

Sounds like you already have your mind made up. Rolling negative equity into an already overpriced bike sounds crazy but hey, if you want to upgrade and this is the only way, do what you've got to do I guess.

Seems to me you already know which decision would make you happy, which is what matters. Like others have said, you always got screwed in the opinion of others....so it goes.

If they are willing to deal as you say, negotiate the price and get them to throw a year warranty in there. Remember to use your legs, even if you know they will bring you right back later on....lol.

As for which bike....which one gives you a bigger smile when you sit on it?

I'm no expert, but I've looked around enough that I wouldn't pay that price for either of those bikes. Better deals are plentiful around here. as are used fatboys and street bobs.

Paying 7 years of the fatboy, I can't see having a payment on a 17 year old bike. Most places won't finance a used bike over 7 years old around here.

The Street Bob is way over priced and totally plain jane. Go with the Fat Boy and be somebody.
