Default Extended Warranties

Buying a 2008 Fat Bob with 1500 miles on it from an HD dealer. He's offering an "extended" warranty that covers roughly everything that would fail - but not regular maintenance. For a year warranty, it's $999. Seems pretty steep. But a 5 year warranty is like $1,600 or $320 a year. It transferable if the bike is sold. I could see $1,600 in expenses over 5 years - What do you think? Could that be reasonable and worth it?

like the old commercial, you can pay them now, or you can pay them later. You choose. I'd say if $$ wasn't an issue, go ahead and do it. I got the extended warrenty with mine and glad I did it. Your mileage may differ. If you are handy with a wrench, you may be able to do many of the repairs on your own for much less.

I would`nt - if the bike is in good shape then the regular maintainance should keep everything in running order - if you don`t abuse the bike then there is no reason for a tranny, clutch or motor to fail.

I renewed mine last week. Went ahead and bougt 4 years. I got one when I boughtmy 04 and have had to use it a cuple of times. Both of which would have cost more than what I paid for the warranty.

It's a gamble but for me was worth the price of the warranty for my new bike. I bet a thousand bucks that the bike will need a major repair and Harley is betting it won't.

I bought one with my 99 RK. I think I paid about $1,300 for 4 years. I had the engine and trans in mind when I bought the warranty. If I had to do it over I would only get the warranty if I were buying a bike with a stereo system. Those radio units and amps get expensive and they do go bad often.

I was offered an extended warranty when I bought my '02 Heritage back in January. About the same prices you were quoted. I turned it down.

No problems so far. If it makes it to Jan. '11, I'm 1000 bucks ahead!

I bought one for my wife's car a few years ago and paid 1200 dollars for it. Used it one time for a repair that cost 800 dollars.

Buy a screw driver, a pair of pliers & a service manual & you'll be $ ahead. Extended warranties are designed to benefit the salesman, not the buyer.
