Well, a search didn't bring up anything relevant on this, so here goes...
I am looking for a novelty that is better constructed than your typical 30.00 pos. My novelty flexes and is just cheap, but I met a dude who was using a kayak helmet, and it was perfect. It's shell was rock hard, and the small liner looked comfy.
Does anyone know of some makers of more sturdy novelty helmets?
And before my mom shows up here, yes I know novelty helmets do not provide the same impact protection that NASA helmets do. I am however convinced that quality, hardened construction isn't a bad thing.
The problem I see with the novelty helmets is the chin strap system. I don't want a helmet built like an ice chest myself but I do want one that has a good buckle system for the slide down the road. Standards on helmet construction have been over engineered in my thinking.
Try carbonfiberhelmets.com
They were DOT until a few months ago when they lost certification.
i don't believe this company sells anything at all anymore. but they charged people nearly $200 for "DOT" helmets they knew were not "DOT" at all. then when they were forced to recall the helmets for not coming close to meeting DOT standards they simply stopped refunding people, took their site down, and stopped answering the phone.
now if that's a company you want to do business with by all means, but caveat emptor...
PS: their helmets were poorly constructed and the fit was terrible, i hated mine from day one and was shocked by how many people recommended them.

Exactly. A better retention system is what I am after. I really don't want to do business with the ACC people. Has anyone seen a daytona novelty in person?
As for the kayak, the owner had no idea who made it and had had it for a few years. That's not to say I want a kayak helmet, but I appreciated how well it was constructed.
