He is correct in saying that the rigidly mounted engine of a Softail is part of what makes the frame stronger. What he missed was that when Harley introduced the 2004 Sportster they explained that they had to reinforce many parts of the frame (as they did on all rubber mount models) to compensate for lost rigidity with the rubber mount.

The extra weight and complexity of a rubber mount frame is the way Harley controlled vibration before they started using counterbalancing. I think the idea of isolating an engine with rubber started in the late 60s with the Norton Commando.

Hard to argue that the frame tight around the engine is not more the classic HD look that they seem to be going after. I remain surprised that they haven't gone to a "B" engine for at least the touring bikes. They would save money and cause a ton of upgrade sales.

I also think it's kind of funny when riders of one style of Harley feel they need to put down other types of Harley. What's the matter, no Jap bikes to pick on? It's only September and cabin fever seems to have hit some.

It's my understanding that the rear suspension on softails does not permit rubber mounting. Period. Otherwise they would have.

Some of the Sportster guys should see this thread, as much kidding as they get they would probably get a kick out of seeing some of the Softail guys whining.

No brainer there.

But the way they compensated for it (balanced motor) was a wonderful thang!
The only reason they don't balance the "A" motor is because they'd have to re engineer that frame.
The Dyna guys are suffering a bit, considering the threads I keep seeing complaining about vibration. Only so many people can complain until one see's a pattern.

Speaking of whining, I was riding the other day with a group of guys. The guy on the Sportster was whining about the guy on the Ultra making fun of his bike. The guy on the Ultra was whining that he could hear a whine everytime he was riding next to the guy on the Softail and he thought it was coming from his bike. Turned out it was just the guy on the Softail whining because the guy on the Sportster was calling him a poser.
I finally just took off and left them on my Dyna.
