Default RE: Preferred Lane / Position

I usually like being on the right side when I'm in a group, but when I'm by myself I am usually on the left for some reason.

Hey Cowboy Harry,

I have read an article where the bike cops at a nataional bike cop rodeo were quizzed about what is the safest lane for a motorcycle. The concensous amongst the bike cops was that the far left or "high speed" lane was the safest as long as the rider kept up with traffic. The reason for this is that the right lane has many vehicles exiting and entering the roadway and if these drivers peak in their mirrors they frequenlty will not see a bike in the far portion of a lane. The middle lane has the same problem with other vehicles cutting in front of you from both the right and the left.

Riding in the right side of a lane with vehicles on your right is the best spot because vehicles will be able to see you better. If you are in the left part of the lane someone glancing in their mirror can easily miss seeing you. I have had this happen to me in Laughlin once where I was in the left part of the left lane and a Blazer pulled over and just knicked my fairing. The woman said she looked but never saw me. I was lucky and did't go down but another inch and it would have been a whole different deal.

I stay in the righthand lane unless I'm passing other vehicles.

Here, we have L3s (left lane losers) all over the place, and it drives me nuts when they hold up traffic because they don;t know or don;t care that the left lane is for passing!

Cheers!

For 2 lane, I tend to stay right unless passing. For 3 lane, center lane. As for position in the lane, left half usually, right if the road on the left is rough. I like to stay in the drivers mirror of the car in front of me.
