I use two things for cleaning my windshield... Water and "Slip Streamer" cleaner/polish.
I keep a plastic spray bottle in the garage filled with water and when I have bugs on the windshield I mist some water on and let it soak into the bug goo for several minutes. A micro fiber will take off the goo after it is soft. Then I spray a coat of the Slip Streamer on the windshield which keeps it slick enough that the bugs don't stick as bad next time I need to take them off.
Remember, when wiping you windshield only use an up & down motion. Circles or side to side motion is a bad thing. Anytime you put rag to windshield you will leave some scratches. Up and down scratches don't scatter the sunlight as bad as side to side scratches.
As already mentioned the light soap and bottle water is the safest until I hear better also. Thats what they recommend at the places that do the plastic window tinting on cars. They guarantee their work so they don't want you scratching it up. And I think our windshields are made out of Lexan rather than plastic. Or maybe that is a type of plastic but it is highly susceptible to scratches.
Lexan polycarbonate is one of the most widely known "plastics". Lexan sheet with its unique combination of high impact strength, flame retardancy, and thermoformability makes it ideally suited for security applications. No other plastic can match Lexan's combination of light transmittance (clarity), and the ability to withstand extreme impact.
Yes HD uses Lexan a general electric product.
I've built machine guards over the years with this product. A Very tough polycarbonate.
80 grit sand paper is what I use! For those stubborn bugs and such, I'll use 60 grit!
Had a friend one time take along ride out of town came home tired ,bike was a mess. Daughter wanted to help so she washed the bike for him. When he got up she was so happy to tell him what she had done . she told him the bugs on the windshield were tough but she used the sos pad and they came right off......................... needless to say he needed a new windshield after that !

Not only is it tough but gentle on the screen, it can also be used to wipe off bugs from paintwork, other metalwork, etc. Pricey but good stuff.
