Wow! I sure wouldn't knock the Cat out of a Head Pipe. Just my .02, but Arizona now requires smog/emissions inspections of motorcycles to get your registration renewed, and there may be other states as well. Over the next 5 or 10 years I'd guess that this will wind up happening in a lot of states that presently have these inspections for their cars. Before you say it won't happen; think about it . . . The testing equipment is already well known, and all of the equipment, infrastructure and people that know how to do a smog check are already in place . . . so it's a real easy (and probably would be a popular thing with the non-riding folks who also seem to vote) to have happen. The things that'll keep you from passing a smog inspection are "Missing or Modified" (eg not original equipment with the original equipment part number) or "Tail Pipe" emissions (HC, CO and NOx) over the mandated limits. Not having the original Cat will cause a bike to fail on both counts.

Just my opinion; but when I put my V&H System on, I wrapped my entire Original Equipment Catalyst Exhaust System including all the nuts and bolts etc., in some nice old soft towels and then carefully put them in a box that went up in the ceiling area of my garage. If your state starts requiring motorcycle smog inspections you're going to need those pipes once a year or every other year (depending on the frequency of your state inspections). I don't know what Harley-Davidson wants for a set of Cat equipped Head Pipes or God forbid the entire exhaust system, but I'm pretty confident that it sure as S*** ain't cheap. My guess is that mandatory smog inspections aren't going to help to lower the price any.

I agree with Bluehighway. Should always keep OEM stuff, if you sell the bike and want to leave mod's on fine, but in my city, the dealer will not give you a penny more for mods. So, I always put the OEM stuff back on and sell it. Last bike, the money bought all the mods for this bike. Even kept my factory air cleaner, so when I trade the bike I can sell the fuel management.

Must be Rochester HD, almost bought the Fugly there until they jacked up the price.
