How can that happen?????????? My exhaust blows. My exhaust does not suck.
I've failed many converters on cars. ( development vehicles under extreme testing) When a converter begins to fail they erode some material before they melt. I've looked at the engine teardowns after a converter failure and in most every case there is engine damage. Walls and bearing surface damage. This is not enough to cause an immediate failure, but has damaged those areas enough that long range durablity is effected. And sometimes it is enough to fail an engine immediately.
And as someone noted above, look up reversion pulses in an exhasut system.
The EPA showed up today all wearing Ted Nugent shirts, said they were going to pay you a visit for showing everyone how easy it is to remove a Government Mandated Air Polution Device.

Just Sayin..........
Didnt you read the fine print. ... Only for off road race track use only...
I believe car cats contain heavy metals such as gallium, cadmium, and a few other words not in a normal vocabulary (like mine), and it would stand to reason a bike cat also contains hazardous materials. Something to think about when sawing and digging stuff out of a pipe. So I would be sure to wear breathing protection, rubber gloves, and do it all on a sheet of plastic which can be sealed in a bag for disposal in an appropriate place, say, the dumpster behind the testing center........ we can all think of a good place for that..
But I would likely hold on to the original unit in case I move to a testing state, or my state becomes one. Just saying.
yeah, i keep saying 'one of these days'.... course its too late now, i've already got the cat out.....

i was gonna say something rude about (you) hanging on to your unit, but.......
i had an 'extra' headpipe, so i was not out anything to give it a try. i still have the 'original unit' in my attic should i ever need it. course, i also have an original 07 exhaust up there too, but that bike's gone......
Wow! I sure wouldn't knock the Cat out of a Head Pipe. Just my .02, but Arizona now requires smog/emissions inspections of motorcycles to get your registration renewed, and there may be other states as well. Over the next 5 or 10 years I'd guess that this will wind up happening in a lot of states that presently have these inspections for their cars. Before you say it won't happen; think about it . . . The testing equipment is already well known, and all of the equipment, infrastructure and people that know how to do a smog check are already in place . . . so it's a real easy (and probably would be a popular thing with the non-riding folks who also seem to vote) to have happen. The things that'll keep you from passing a smog inspection are "Missing or Modified" (eg not original equipment with the original equipment part number) or "Tail Pipe" emissions (HC, CO and NOx) over the mandated limits. Not having the original Cat will cause a bike to fail on both counts.
Just my opinion; but when I put my V&H System on, I wrapped my entire Original Equipment Catalyst Exhaust System including all the nuts and bolts etc., in some nice old soft towels and then carefully put them in a box that went up in the ceiling area of my garage. If your state starts requiring motorcycle smog inspections you're going to need those pipes once a year or every other year (depending on the frequency of your state inspections). I don't know what Harley-Davidson wants for a set of Cat equipped Head Pipes or God forbid the entire exhaust system, but I'm pretty confident that it sure as S*** ain't cheap. My guess is that mandatory smog inspections aren't going to help to lower the price any.
Arizona has always required smog on bikes. There is no "now" about it. In fact, Arizona is trying to get rid of the requirement to smog motorcycles, but the EPA is dragging their feet. Arizona has already passed the law pending EPA approval and has actually had to extend the deadline at least once thanks the the EPA's slowness. Next time do some research.
Just to add a word of caution for anyone removing a "cat", make sure you get ALL the material out. Any material left in the pipe can be injested back into the engine!! And that is a BAD thing!!
