I recently read on this forum or another where someone bought a Schott horsehide (I don't remember the model) and it did not have the removable insulation and he felt it was too warm so had the insulation removed. Upon removable he found that the horsehide was not as thick as he thought and, in fact, had some type of backing glued or somehow attached to the leather to make it stiffer.
I think one would be better off talking to representatives of these different companies if one is picky about what they are buying. There are many of us that appreciate all of these brands. However, I do not think they are all equal. I will not buy a new Vanson even though I think my old Vansons are great. I have also been disappointed in a new Schott while really appreciating my old one. Perhaps buying used on ebay is the way to go. But buyer beware.
If Langlitz' limited styles are to your liking, I don't think you can go wrong with a Langlitz. However, they are expensive and most any leather jacket will last a lifetime.
do you really want to be wearing the cheap jacket if you go down? I would be concerned about a seem splitting and skin following suit.
Someone should email schott about that anecdote above.
I have noticed a trend in reputable, rugged, well built products that build a reputation and then get bought or go public and someone else comes in and rides the name into the ground with garbage product.
Arc'teryx, the outdoor jacket company comes to mind. their stuff used to be amazing, but now it's garbage.
I am looking for some biased opinions (fans of both if possible). Removing the made in USA (I know!).
Anyone bought both and can say the Schott is worth more. After buying some LeatherUp gear I have been happy. Sadly I tried on a Schott and the leather was amazing!! I was about to order leatherUps premium biker jacket for less than a $100 when I found a used Schott 125 for $200 thats practically brand new (Not Vintage).
Is the LeatherUP less quality Leather?
Thanks
If you were comapring the Schott to Harley Davidson leather, I'd say the Schott is better by a mile and you just have to touch it once to tell the difference. But Schott vs. LeatherUp? Really? That's like Mercedes vs. Saturn. I don't even care where it's made - I'd buy Chinese/Pakistani leather all day if it was anywhere near the quality, but it's not.
I have a Leatherup, this jacket won't let me down because it can't for a hundred bucks. A $500 jacket with me would be doomed.
That depends if you want protection or not. Cheap up front won't protect you like a heavy leather will. Same reason I won't wear a $50 helmet. My head is worth more than $50 to me right now.
My Foxcreek is some of the nicest leather I have seen. It's heavy and thick though. You wouldn't want to wear it when not riding. It is more of a purpose piece.
I just have to wonder how far the fall is from HD to LeatherUp. Both are made oversees. My gut says its not much.
At this point I think its clear Schott is a winner and by god if I hit any bonus numbers next year a Langlitz or Lost World are probably the only true nice leathers left.

I went down in my LeatherUp jacket doing 40. I still wear it, scuffs and all...

dortiz, if you can get a practically brand new Schott 125 for $200 then don't spend any more time on this thread. Buy it. That's a very good deal.
As far as an HD FXRG being a mile less than a Schott I would disagree. The jackets are not assembled in the same country but the leather probably comes from the same country. Very little leather is tanned in the USA now.
I recently compared a new FXRG with a new Schott 641 Steerhide and the leather thickness was the same. The design details (hemming, lining finish, etc) and features (vents, removable armor, number of pockets, etc) were superior on the FXRG, IMO. The zippers on the Schott were heavier. Of all the jackets I have measured leather thickness on, the Vanson competition leather and the Fox Creek are the thickest and the same weight (1.8mm, 4.5 oz.).
Get the Schott for $200. You can't go wrong and as you posted, when you win the lottery you can get a Langlitz or Lost Worlds. Good luck.
Not disagreeing about the quality of either but Legendary (made by Schott) and Lost Worlds do not come from the same shop.
As I stated, they certainly appeared to come from the same source. They seemed to be from the same weight horsehide, had the same stitching, the liner was a different color but the quilting of it and the stitching was the same. The belts were of a slightly different design, but the difference was very minor. I doubt one could tell the difference in the two if blindfolded and handed one, at least for the two items we examined. I suppose it's also possible that source shops change from time to time.
I do own Legendary, Schott, and Vanson. They are all of very good quality. I also have several H-D branded jackets and they range from pretty good ( and heavy), to light and cheap. The H-D product has required getting size Med, Lrg, and XLrg just to get the same fit.
I would like to see a Langlitz sometime.
By the way, that is one great looking bike you have there!
