I let my best friend ride my Sportster about a week after i got it. I knew he has rode bikes for years, but not a Harley. I said okay just around the block. As soon as he took off on it he just about runs into the side of a park car. I realized what he did when he took off. He didn't relize it had forward controls when he first took off. He tried to put his feet streight down on the pegs thinking it had mid controls and one of his feet touched the ground which almost made him lose control. I said to myself that will be the last time anyone rides my ride, that was just too close.
It sounds to me like you saved his life. He has no business throwing his leg over a 900lb missile with no riding experience...much less a license or insurance to ride it.
had a guy i play golf with let me ride his harley one day. i had not ridden for several years...got the ol' juices flowing. next thing i know i am buying a new RK and asking myself "why did i ever quit riding in the first place?"
as far as letting an inexperienced rider on your bike, you were right. probably should have spent a little time explaining things to him and offering to help him get started riding...suggested riding course or something. took him to dealer and showed him around.
