You did exactly the right thing, especially since he apparently had no riding experience. It isn't like letting someone take your car around the block. I don't let ANYONE ride my bike...except when it has been at the service center...and if they wreck it...they fix or replace it.
A long time ago, my brother used to ride a smaller metric, but never had a H-D. I let him ride my Electra Glide in a big parking lot once. But then, my brother can afford it.
He was careful and did fine. That was like, 10 years ago, and he still tells anyone within earshot that he rode it whenever I have it with me.
No one has ever rode my bike but me and a trusted mechanic friend, other then that... even my wife knows she is only allowed on the back and again even then she allows no one to sit there either on her part.... lol. It's just the way it is with us and neither of us ever questioned it.
I also just thought I should add that none of my friends are the type even ask such a thing and I am guessing it's because they are the same way about their rides. I am guessing if they ask then they have no clue and shouldn't be on one much less your own to begin with so no worries.

You were right,I don't remember anyone asking to ride by bike but there have been times when someone would ask to drive my 69 Camaro and I tell them the insurance only covers me as a driver and I can't take that chance, usually that works.
