I bought my camping/concert arm band for the chip yesterday and was wondering this....
On the Chip's disclaimer it states
"previously purchased alchol being brought into the compound is prohibited by state law"
I was planning on bringing my own booze to save money and avoid paying rally priced alchol. When you check in does the Chip look thru your truck, trailer and saddle bags looking for this type of stuff?
Have any of ya'll ever brought your own booze into the chip before and if so was it an issue/problem?
They cant search your stuff without permission or a search warrant, even on private property. you still have a few rights... not for long but right now we do.
That sounds like an unusual state law. I stayed elsewhere last time out and we brought in our own booze all week. Not sure why a state law would only apply to the Chip

They also have the right to refuse to allow you to enter their private property if you don't allow them to search you.
At least in 2010 that meant you couldn't take outside alcohol into the fenced off concert area. No problem apparently in bringing it into the campground.
I stayed at the Chip in 2006 and they didn't check anything coming in. Maybe something has changed. With all the big rigs/campers pulling in there i highly doubt they can check everything - even if they wanted to. That aside, i wouldn't stay at the Chip again. Don't get me wrong, it was a nice campground and plenty to offer with big name bands and all but it's on the WRONG side of Sturgis. Not a problem if you plan on staying at the campground the whole time. The problem is you have to go through downtown Stugis everytime you want to ride....then go back through after the ride. On the best day, it would take us 30 minutes to get through. Coming back at the end of the day was the worst. After a long day of riding you are hot and thirsty and just want to get back to the campground for a cold shower and beer. NO, you've got to sit through sometimes an hour of stop and go traffic first. After the first couple of days we did find some back streets/alleys that allowed us to bypass the main street and save a little time but it still took some time. Good luck.
When we were there we always brought the alcohol in in the tour pac or some where they can really see. They sell cases at the front gate and want to sell thier stuff, but nobody ever said anything to us. They don't allow you to take your own booze into the concert area

Stayed all week at the Chip last year 2010. They did not check anything going in to the Property. They do check your person when the concerts start in the evening. People were riding/driving through the front gate of the property with cases of beer strapped on. Party hardy...
P.S. If your favorite band is playing, I recommend Getting the VIP pass... Backstage, drinks already payed for, front row...Kid Rock rocked
2009 they didnt check anything going in to the campground area ,,, BUT if you are going to the "inner circle " where the concerts are they will not let you bring in any beer in even if you bought it there. They have bars that will sell you drinks. Lots have changed since the "olden days" Oh yea, ground is hard and it's 38 at night ! Party on.
