Cool Old Farts?

Couple things about us "Old Farts". First if it wasnt for us there would have been no Harley Davidson for you to ride. We were buying, and wrenching, the Harleys when it wasnt a Yuppie cool thing to do. When Harley was close to collapsing we kept buying and riding. I was riding a 71 ElectraGlide cross country back in the day when 20% of my baggage was tools, no way any of you youngsters would have had the ***** for that.

Second maybe, just maybe, if you get to be as good a rider as some of us "Old Farts" you may live to be an "Old Fart" and hope you have half the fun we have had. Had a 4800 mile, solo, trip last summer which isnt even close to my record, with another one planned this summer.

And last, keep posting pics of your "parts bin' custom and make sure its shiny sitting out front of you house. Ill be out riding...

Just remember, us old guys didn't get to be old guys by doing anything stupid. There are old riders and there are stupid riders, but there are no old, stupid riders.

Riding in packs? Love it. Love the reaction of the people when you roll thru town, or jamming down the highway at a high rate of fuel consumption. You gotta pay attention of what's going on but its worth it, I don't get to ride in groups as much as I used to due to family obligations but will again someday.

Well, now how do you define old fart? Maybe you youngens should do a little research and thank the Graybeards the next time you see one. THEY are the reason the MoCo is still around, they were riding and wrenching back when it wasn't "cool". They did it because that's what they loved, and were doing it with some great people and making some great memories. Hell I'm only 42 and when them guys start telling stories I buy a round and just sit back and listen. Its stories that come from those guys that had me wanting a HD since I was 12. I learned the ropes so to speak riding a kick only shovelhead, riding the hell out of it all summer and wrenching on it all winter. Packing the saddlebags and taking off for a week, sleeping under the stars ( or an occasional car wash if it was raining) It used to be about riding, not about how many parts you bolted on. Maybe you need to get farther away than your local bike night and put some miles on those bolt-on customs and get to making your own stories, Cause someday, if your lucky, you'll be the old fart.

Just my 2 cents worth

I've only ridden twice on longer rides....

Once with 3 of my co-workers and the other time with my uncle and his co-worker. None of them are in a hurry to get anywhere so I do enjoy riding with them. I can see how riding with LARGE groups would be less than enjoyable as well as riding with individuals who are in a hurry to get nowhere.

Riding is riding. It doesn't matter where or with who or how many. Just ride!! If you call whats left of that sporty you wrecked a custom, then you should ride alone. I wouldn't want to be seen with it.
Coming from an old fart that is............by the way did you get the rise here you were looking for....?

I like riding by my self, with my brother, with a friend or two, with a group of people I just met (but I get jittery then) or in a group from 100 to 1500.
Talk about a trip, do the cherokee rememberance ride across Tn or Alabama. They block the roads and it takes hours for the group to go by. I've done that twice.

Now, back to the group I just met. Today I caught up to a couple friends at a bar. They were a group of about 10 or 12. I knew four of them and had ridden with two. When the group left, it was as usual, faster than I would normally ride. I fell in at the back, I'm more comfortable there when I can see what is going on in front of me.
Some pealed off as we rode to the next stop and the group did pretty good as a whole. We stayed together with out stretching out and some rode side by side. In the back, we staggered. I don;t mind riding beside some one I know and have ridden with but when we just met, I prefer staggered.
What was the point of this ramble? Oh yeah, I remember now. It was an Old Fart leading the group. Hell, Old Farts like to go fast too.
I'll soon be 54 and I decided to pass every body in the last two miles. Got to pick my parking spot that way. The only Geezer Glide in the group and first in the parking lot.
Damn old fart gotta go to bed now, past my bedtime.
