Packs are kind of like flying formation. You hope lead knows what he's doing and has good SA, you keep you're head up and alert for anything out of the ordinary, stay in tight, follow lead and just try and be smooth. You need to use a lot of hand signals or radio to keep each other informed, and try not to do anything stupid. They're great for mutual support, but they're tiring to ride in for long periods and unless you're lead you don't get to see too much. I ride in them when I have to, but I prefer a loose two-man formation myself.
I've never ridden in a huge pack, but I really enjoy riding with five or six buddies. Looking back and seeing them all behind is a pretty cool feeling.
I only ride with my Brothers, and after all the years I still have to remind one of them not to get too close or beside me, I think he watched CHIPS too many times as a child...
And to show the old farts how one customizes a Harley.
I and my friends consider me an "old fart" and I will do my scooters the way I want I need no one, not even a learned person like you, to tell me what I like. Thank you very much.
I'm in an M/C that was established in 1946. We ride side by side in packs, from time to time. Largest I've been in was about 70 bikes after a funeral. At 80 mph. To me, it's an awesome experience, just being a part of it/in it. It is a whole hell of a lot harder than riding by myself, but damn! It's worth it.
I am a member of my local HOG chapter and a road captian. I have taught group riding skills from the MSF located on the Harley website. Once you learn the standards of safe group riding, you will be welcome riding in a group. If you plan to ride in a group and are a novice, ask questions. Group riding is about rding safely. I can ride solo anytime, and do quit often, but to enjoy the company of so many other riders is just one of the many reasons I ride.
I do not like riding in packs. Mostly because people tend to act like yoyos and since I have a bad elbow I like to use the cruse control and if I am in a pack I can't. I do like to have company when I am riding.

If the person in front or behind you has "manure for brains"....pick your spot....either miles ahead or stop & slap'em. As to me being too old....I like to listen to the weekend young riders....like this guy....come into the bar & blow crap & know that they wouldn't even know how to start my bike that is 10 years older than they are.
