Most of my riding is by my self. I like being able to change my mind about where I am going at any intersection and not having to talk to others about it. Of course, as an old fart it may be because I forgot where I am going!

I do ride in one huge ride a year. The Cripple Creek POW/MIA ride every August has about 5,000 bikes all rolling into a small mountain town (with casinos) I am not a vet, but I sure honor and support their service.

It's a great ride with riders coming from all over Colorado to honor our veterans.

Well. I ride alone when commuting to work or just cruising the back roads to relax. I belong to a M/C, so I also ride in a pack quite often. We ride tight and fast. The old guys keep up just fine, as they are the ones who taught the young bucks how to do it right. Then sometimes I ride in loose unorganized packs with 3-8 friends that I trust and enjoy riding with. Whatever you prefer, just get out and ride. There's nothing worse than a Harley sitting in the garage collecting dust.

I mostly ride alone, have done some toy runs and such but they are mostly short hop type of things, which lots of times makes me nervous about those around me.
couple of ?? when riding with others in a staggered formation {which is the only legal way here} how far back from the guy in front of you do you stay? I find the guys behind me always seem to wanna be in my blind spot when in this situation.
A couple of guys I know and myself sometimes practice riding side by side which seems safer than being staggered.

When I think about people riding in a pack, or formation I mostly associate it with M/C clubs, who I in my limited knowledge would assume go out in pairs or bunches and practice riding beside each other before going in big groups, I think its probably even fairly safe in that situation. 20 or 30 guys riding side by side down the highway is one of the coolest things you will ever see....anyone who can ride like that gets Respect from me {you guys do practice right??}

Yes we do! When a prospect comes on board, the first thing we start teaching him is how to be safe in a pack. (Right after the Road Captain inspects his bike and is sure it's safe) We'll take him out with 2 or 3 at first, until we know he can handle his bike and we're sure he's not nervous about the proximity of the others around him. Once he feels comfortable, we put him in the pack.

I was riding a 71 ElectraGlide cross country back in the day when 20% of my baggage was tools, no way any of you youngsters would have had the ***** for that.

Second maybe, just maybe, if you get to be as good a rider as some of us "Old Farts" you may live to be an "Old Fart" and hope you have half the fun we have had. Had a 4800 mile, solo, trip last summer which isnt even close to my record, with another one planned this summer.

And last, keep posting pics of your "parts bin' custom and make sure its shiny sitting out front of you house. Ill be out riding...
OK, Wild Bill..Now you have me wondering. I just took a gander at your photos. Am I getting old and losing my sight? Are you getting old and losing your sight? Is your camera all f&^##^-up? What's with the focus?
Be cool, Man. I AM old...so are you, and we're still riding, so I guess it must be the .
Cheers buddy

Ride by myself, with friends, and with my bro's in a formation but, stay away from large benefit rides like the plague. I have seen many mishaps on benefit rides by people who have no business riding in a pack for their first time. The point here is, ride often and learn as much as you can. Most groups, associations, and club's will help give the lesser experienced riders the knowledge they need to be safe.
