Hi from the Uk, I have a 4yr old Deluxe, within the first 2yrs the dealer replaced the rear fender due to the paint blowing off. Now less than 2yrs later the same thing has happened in the same place, rust has also appeared in various spots on the front one too (the only time this bike sees water is when It's cleaned, and is always garaged). I wrote a letter to the dealer and to their credit they are going to pay for two thirds of the paint job.I spoke to one of the guys there today and the issue of how to prevent this happening again seems to be up in the air at the moment.
My question to all of you good people out there is, are there any products out there that I might get in the UK, that they can coat /seal the underneath of the fenders with to stop this from coming back?.
Cheers Gerry
Greetings. Underneath a fender is a pretty high abuse place with rocks and whatnot bouncing around in there all the time. Rustoleum is some pretty hardcore stuff. It takes a day to dry and a week to harden, once hard it's tough to kill. A couple of coats of black might help.
Are you talking about paint coming off the backside (underneath side) of the fenders? Or the outside exposed/visible surfaces?
If it's the underside you're talking about I find it hard to imagine HD paying anything for that. I'd consider that normal wear and tear from usage.
If the paint is coming off the outer surfaces, now that's a completely different story.
As far as protection for the underside goes, I'd try some autobody undercoating. It's available in spray cans and provides a pretty tough, flexible, coating that will absorb many of the impacts from small road debris.
Get an auto shop to spray it with Rhino-liner, as used in the boxes of pickups. Almost indestructible, oil, chemical & gas proof. before spraying the liner.Make sure they clean the underside of the fender spotlessly.
+1 on the underbody spray coating, pull your fenders, tape off the top and apply, I used 2 coats, I live off San Diego bay, a lot of salt air, if you can't find the undercoating, rustolem(sp) works also, good luck
First you can not stop rust. If the rust is coming up through the paint, it is coming from the other side. The fender needs replaced, not repainted. You can only slow down rust like it seems they have done in this case. Replace the fender, primer and undercoat the underside of the fender.
