I usually put mine into a laundry detergent bottle or milk jugs and take them up to a auto parts store. Most of the time I go to Murrays. I'm not sure if you have one in your area but they should be able to help you dispose of it.
Well.... I have used the following:
[ul][*] City Recycling Center[*] Wal-Mart (they have been jerks about it though)[*] AutoZone[*] O'Reilly's Auto Parts[*] Exxon Service Center (jerks as well... remember the Valdez!!)
[/ul]
It seems that the auto parts stores are the least hassling, Wal-Mart first said I had to have a reciept proving that I bought the oil there, then I pointed out their "Earth Friendly" sign which said they would take any automotive engine oil... Exxon has said that their recycling tank is full (three months in a row??). Anyway, most of the used oil down here gets filtered and refined back into marine grade diesel for the fishing trawlers and off shore oil service vessels.
In Kalifornia you cannot legally just dump oil out. You cannot put containers of oil in the trash, but.....
it is legal to make it a solid and then throw it in the trash. How? Kitty Litter. Just mix it with kitty litter. Used is OK. Put it in a plastic bag and bingo - legal disposal.
