Default Exhaust paint question.....

The after market slip-on mufflers on my 2003 Fat Boy are looking kinda ragged, the previous owner of this bike didn't pay much attention to details as far as keeping the rust at bey, and they are starting to blue as well. Took the heat shields off and couldn't believe the rust on the insides of them, and the stock pipes are looking ugly as well.....

Spent my wad buying the bike and can't afford new pipes til probably Christmas, so I was thinking about painting the heat shields and slip-on's flat black. The local auto parts store here sells Plastikote Hi-Heat Paint for headers and exhaust. It claims to be good up to 1300°, was wondering if a product like this will hold up on my pipes, at least until I can swing a set of V&H or Samson pipes.....?

I have no idea how paint will hold up to extreme heat. Look on E-bay, you may find some stock pipes really cheap until you can move up to the ones you want.

if the paint is intended for headers then you'll be fine with that.....just make sure to get nice even coats so it looks good

Used "High-Heat" Flat Black paint on steel expansion chambers way back in ancient history....The best part is you can sand off the paint easily if it starts to rust/peel off and hit it with another layer of flat black until you get your new pipes.....

Just don't paint over top of chrome!!!!!

That's the problem, the chrome is what I'd be painting. I assume the chrome would have to be well sanded and cleaned before spraying, or do you think the paint won't stick no matter how well I prep the surface.....?

Sorry, I'm still a bit of a rookie on this forum, having seen questions of all kinds posted here, I assumed my question wouldn't be out of place. I'll try my luck on the "Paint & Powder Coat" forum......

Try "brushing" the chrome with a Scotch Bright pad. It will make the chrome looking like stainless steel. If you don't like the look you can paint over it.

I sanded the chrome off the exhaust system of my Fatbob and used Rustoleum heat paint from the can. I "sprayed" it and it worked well for two years, till I found a great deal on some pipes.
