If the need arose and I had access to one I would not think twice about it. It seems the older I get the less I care about what others think. Least of all some stranger who I will never see again in my life.
I usually ride the Electra Glide to work so normally not an issue. I never wore a back pack at school, but when I ride my Softail to work I use the one from the stealer, it has the vented pad material to keep your back cool. I sling it low so it rests on the seat, no neck issues that way (bad neck) If nobody likes how it looks, they don't have to look. But the main thing is I'm riding.
I used to wear a backpack on a sport bike for commuting to work. My back would be soaked with sweat before I got there. It's like wearing a heater on your back in warm weather.
I see plenty of Sportsters around here ridden by younger guys (early 20's) with backpacks on. And strapped to the backpack is their skateboard.
I wore one for a while, carrying my laptop, etc to work. Now, I strap it to the detach sissybar if I need it. Pleasure rides, I don't use it ... but works well for carrying stuff for work. It does not mess with your center of gravity . Unless you wear one loose and carry 3 bowling *****.
This topic has been hashed over time and time again. I always find it funny how many people are so anti backpack because the wearer "looks ridiculous". Always wondered why some of these guys were checking out how other riders looked and commenting on it. I suspect it is due to too much time around the wife watching Sex in the City and discussing how ***** 1 is dressed so much better than ***** 2
I'm not strapping anything to myself that's going to raise my center of gravity and make balance more difficult.
Are you putting 40lbs of bricks in that backpack? Most ridiculous thing I've read today...
I wear a backpack on my bike when I have to take my laptop to and from work. As far as how I look, I don't GAF one bit what anyone thinks. I'm younger than most of you though, and honestly, most of the younger riders I hang with think that people riding around in 1/2 helmets look ridiculous, so it's pretty much a silly thing to modify what you ride or how you ride or what you wear based on what some dumbass is going to think about you.
Seriously. I think the people avoiding wearing a convenient backpack on short trips because they are afraid their friends won't think they look cool are pretty weak.
